Tracks between Bliss and Dutch Kills
drawbridge originally known as the Montauk branch, were classed as
"Secondary Track C" per G.O. #503 dated 8/12/1958 Research:
Jeff Erlitz |
C
Secondary was the track that went from Bliss to LI City on the Lower
Montauk. Just west of where Bliss stands is where the Montauk Cut-off
secondary (MCS) trails into Bliss, and farther down is the Dutch Kills
drawbridge. From Bliss you could use the C Secondary to get to LI City or
HAROLD and/or old Yard A via the Montauk Cut-off secondary. After Bliss
closed, JAY would block with the Section B dispatcher use of the
secondary's and they would give authority to a train by use of a "S Card".
After the decision to give the Lower Montauk to the NYAR, the use of the S
Card was discontinued, the MCS was abandoned after Cabin M Drawbridge and
it became NYAR Secondary track 1 and 2 east of Bliss. Not sure what they
call C Secondary (just NYAR Secondary?) now but it does get used for the
NYA to access their new Wheelspur yard. Info: Krispy 12/2023

DB Cabin 08/10/1963 was just painted. There was a wooden walkway to Cabin M. The bridge tender (a B&B employee) stayed at Cabin M when the bridges were opened since Cabin M had creature comforts. Depending on the trick, the bridge tender usually drove down to BLISS and played cards with the operator until there was an imminent movement or a boat whistled for the bridge. Cabin M had 24 hour coverage.
