KellerNote: The white summer uniform caps
worn by the train crew were issued to PRR and LIRR train crews
(1908-1915). Additionally, the Long Island Express (1883-1913) baggage
wagon on the platform operated from 1883 to 1913. This narrows the window
for dating from 1908 to 1913. Research: Dave Keller |

Locust Valley view E Artist: Steven Cryan

The painting,
by Steven Cryan, of H6sb #311 and freight passing LOCUST tower was painted
from an actual photo of that view (c. late 1930's). Notice the order board signal flag
hanging outside the upstairs window and the block operator handing up
orders to the engineer. The side of the flag facing the camera has a
stripe painted on it and is a different color from the other side,
indicating to oncoming trains that the order isn't for them but for trains
in the opposite direction.
The color of the
back of the order board is, actually, BLACK with a white stripe to show
oncoming trains that this specific order is NOT for them. The
side facing the engineer who is supposed to receive the order is yellow. .
. . no stripe.
The order board for the proper engineer's
side was yellow. At night a lantern with a yellow globe was hung on
the proper side.
Check out the
block operator handing up orders to the engineer. He's wearing a
suit and fedora! Research: Dave Keller |
