Classification lights were removed from atop PRR/LIRR engine smoke boxes beginning in June, 1940.  New-style marker lights were placed atop smoke boxes beginning in June, 1942.

This locomotive had neither classification lights nor markers, therefore the photo was shot sometime between June, 1940 and June, 1942.  It could be some time AFTER June 1942 and this locomotive hadn't yet had the new markers installed, however by 1943, wartime restrictions prohibited railroad photography on the LIRR so it's probably not as late as that.  Note the Naval officer, in full uniform, right in front of the platform lamp.   Dave Keller
