The Rail train transports Continuous Welded Rail
segments. Today's job is to creep along the Central Branch at walking
pace while the puller runs the rail off the rack and the track crew spikes
the ribbons in place.
Keep up a good pace otherwise its extra work to
set up for the next crew which is the Track Laying Machine.

Single Tracking For Rails. A pair of MTA LIRR
Trains pass the Rail Train near Bayside, NY on Saturday, 5/22/2021.
The rail train was dropping welded rail between Little Neck and Bayside as
part of ongoing work projects on the Port Washington Branch. By using
welded rail, the need for maintenance is significantly reduced and the ride
is much smoother. Info/Photos/Archive: Marc Glucksman - River Rail Photo |

LIRR Main Line "Cut-and-Throw" weekend #2, in New Cassel, between Westbury
and Hicksville. As of 1:00pm this afternoon. Track 1 has already been
thrown over and is reconnected. Final tamping, lining, surfacing,
installation of third rail and testing of track circuits still need to be
done. On the right, where the welded rail is piled, is where new Track
2 will be installed over the next month or so. Jeff Erlitz |
