LIRR
CABOOSE LETTERING SCHEMES |
The large but thin LONG ISLAND
lettering on this caboose is most interesting and I don't
think anybody noticed it.
Most of the Long Island steel cabooses built for the LIRR by International
Car Company had much
THICKER lettering than this caboose and also a later orange repaint of
C54.
Also, this THIN lettering was also used on LIRR wooden N52/N52A cabooses
that were painted in the
orange paint scheme with large LONG ISLAND lettering, first in black and
later in dark blue/gray.
So what I'm saying is that there are two DISTINCT letterings for orange
cabooses, as well as schemes that
had the original Dashing Dan with base, then larger Dan without base and
who is running in BOTH directions
and then cabooses with no Dan after he was dropped.
As for the MTA scheme(s), I could write quite a feature on the blue and
yellow and all the variations--Steve L., I promise to
do this at some point in the future.
The ex NYO&W cabooses painted orange also had this thin lettering as well
as the two N5 cabooses, 1 and 2. Mike Boland
