The loco
was the second of the two in the 1926 Calverton Pickle Works wreck and
was scrapped right afterwards.
The man in the foreground was
getting ready to hang the mail bag. Judging by the elevation and the
angle of the photo, I'm thinking the photographer was standing on the
mail crane. Research:

Note 1: That does not
necessarily have any relation to a block office there at that time.
"EM" could have been used for BOTH ticket office as well as block
office, probably handled by the agent there. It would appear that
the 1903 CR4 and the 1905 photo proves that point, as the calls were in
effect yet there was no block signal yet in service. The 1906
image shows a block signal in service. The signal was apparently
gone per the c. 1910 rear view of the postcard in Dave Morrison's
collection, however that date is only an approximate date.
Either way, the signal was
gone by the time James. V. Osborne photographed the depot c. 1925 and
the agency closed in either 1932 or 1934 (see my disclaimer in previous
email.) Osborne photographed the LIRR from 1921 when he started working
there as an extra block operator until 1930 when he took over as agent
at Southampton. Research: Dave Keller |
