FREEPORT: S. S. R.
R. service began: 9/23/1867 amidst great festivities (per Brooklyn Daily
Eagle article of 09/24/1867. Depot moved: 1899, to Henry St. and joined to
the Freight House.
2nd depot opened: 4/3/1899, Out of service: 5/05/1959 and razed.
3rd temporary station in service: 50/5/1959

LI TRACTION CO. OUT OF SVC: 12/12/26 WITH OPENING OF “FY” TOWER. CABIN

“”FY” block station cabin trackside depot. It shows the railroad at
Freeport as quite the busy place in 1925. The section house is at the left,
and "FY" cabin. The operator in the cabin operated both the block signal
and the crossing gates. When the block signal was removed, the cabin became
the crossing shanty. It's visible at the left of the last car of the train
in the 1940 photo (right). Beyond the cabin in the large express house and
beyond that, the depot with the semaphore block signals and mast.

emergencies...manually taking over the interlocking if need be... operating
the switches and displaying signals with instructions from Babylon or Valley
(whoever has control on that particular day) just to keep trains moving.
