The Jamaica Hat Trick - As a hot June day comes to a close, the rush hour is
winding down at the third busiest rail station in the NYC area. A Long
Island bound train, led by a DE30AC, reflects the setting sun as it heads
into Jamaica station while a pair of M7 & M3 EMU sets rest in the layup yard
below. 7/16/2024

"A PENN STATION FAMILY PORTRAIT"
- LIRR M1s Penn Station, Sept 1974
When thinking of the LIRR in the early to mid 1970s the clear symbol of the
railroad's renaissance was the M1 car, the first of which entered service in
the late 1960's. The design was the brain child of MTA engineer Arthur
Raabe, and the first few orders of cars were built by the Budd Corporation.
Here we see four M1 trains tied up at the
west end of Penn Station where there is a segment of the station under
daylight. I was on a one week tour of duty at Penn Station getting to know
the area at track level from the entrance at the east river tunnels to the
west end of the station. Needless to say, it was quite an experience.
(I never traveled without a camera). At the far left a train of Penn
Central (former PRR) MP54 cars can be seen. Info/Photo/Archive:
