After unloading visitors to Kings Park State Hospital, the train would back
from the hospital station, and cut off all but one car. The one car became
a crew car as the train went the rest of the way to Port Jefferson to be
turned on the wye, then back to the hospital to pick up the return train and
riders.The attached image shows G5s
#37 pulling that one-crew-car hospital train back west to Kings Park State
Hospital , passing G5s #s 48, 28 and 49 laying up in the West Yard, Port
Jefferson in October, 1940. Photo: A. Seibel - Archive/Research: Dave Keller |

The Jamaica Hat Trick - As a hot June day comes to a close, the rush hour is
winding down at the third busiest rail station in the NYC area. A Long
Island bound train, led by a DE30AC, reflects the setting sun as it heads
into Jamaica station while a pair of M7 & M3 EMU sets rest in the layup yard
below. 7/16/2024

"A PENN STATION FAMILY PORTRAIT"
- LIRR M1s Penn Station, Sept 1974
When thinking of the LIRR in the early to mid 1970s the clear symbol of the
railroad's renaissance was the M1 car, the first of which entered service in
the late 1960's. The design was the brain child of MTA engineer Arthur
Raabe, and the first few orders of cars were built by the Budd Corporation.
Here we see four M1 trains tied up at the
west end of Penn Station where there is a segment of the station under
daylight. I was on a one week tour of duty at Penn Station getting to know
the area at track level from the entrance at the east river tunnels to the
west end of the station. Needless to say, it was quite an experience.
(I never traveled without a camera). At the far left a train of Penn
Central (former PRR) MP54 cars can be seen. Info/Photo/Archive:

Here is a cool sight in Patchogue of 3 LIRR
engines next to each other; two DM30AC’s and an DE30AC. Pictured on
the left with DM30AC 520 leading is train 6012 from Jamaica to Montauk with
a 10 car set. Pictured in the middle with DM30AC 506 trailing is train
6095 (Sunday Version of 6005) from Montauk to Penn Station with a 12 car
set. Pictured on the right with DE30AC 400 is a stored train waiting
for its next run. If you look closely, you can also see a 4th train in
the station with deadhead equipment 3022 from Jamaica to Southampton waiting
for clearance.
