LIRR Car Load Reports for the period 1973-1983 provide the paper freight car loads.  I didn’t see the need to go further into later LIRR dates, as this provided a good sample for the time frame; post MTA and the post-Emery 1958 maps after many Grade Crossing Elimination Projects. The LIRR delivered over 58,000 loads during the 10 year period.

LIRR and NYA had a substantial paper/box business, all virtually gone now. A substantial amount of freight boxcar revenue from this type of newsprint /paper roll traffic, over the years.

Just about all of the paper traffic (save for Newsday/Pinter) came through the NY Cross Harbor floats at Bay Ridge, along with coal for Kings Park. The rate was superior to Conrail, via Selkirk, as the surcharges (up to $500 per car) they placed on Long Island traffic through Fresh Pond.

Note: Loads shipped out via double door boxcars, for example SP #746751 (same group as #746753 on the Shippers Order attached.) Double doors for ease of loading  “clean” paper refuse and shipment outbound for recycle at paper mills located in Ontario, Canada, Green Bay, WI, and New England  for processing/production.

Newspaper Delivery: There were many stops where bundles of newspapers were unloaded. Unloading usually consisted of throwing them out the baggage door. I specifically recall some Hampton stations and Speonk, along with a few on the Main Line out East. The shop owner would later drive up and pick up his papers. I saw bundles tipped off moving trains at spots on the platform before the train stopped, but I don't know if they were ever tossed at stations where no stop was made. Both Newsday and the LI Press were delivered. I don't know about the City papers. I recall the the LI Press being loaded at Union Hall Street. I recall seeing piles of bundles lined up on the east end of that platform in the morning for loading onto East End trains.  Info: LongIslandTool     Click for more Newspaper Delivery
