Donated to the RMLI by Lionel LLC, electric trains
in April 2009. – This permanent exhibit, (designed after the 1949 New York
City Lionel Toy Train Display), was moved from Lionel’s offices at
Chesterfield, Michigan and lovingly restored by museum volunteers.
Children of all ages will be amazed at this fourteen feet by forty feet
train layout, able to run seven train sets at a time and chock full of
Lionel accessories that you can operate!
“The Magic Lives On . . . . . . ” On April 9, 2011
the Museum opened the restored Historic Lionel Layout within the renovated Freeman
North Exhibit Hall at its campus in Riverhead, NY. A cadre of dedicate
volunteers continue to maintain and upgrade the layout, keeping it in top
operating condition for people from all over the World to view and enjoy.
Today seven O Gauge trains, one S Gauge train, one N Scale miniature park
train and two trolleys run on the layout, eighty-three accessories are
operated from push buttons along the edge of the layout. |

Lionel accessories along the "South Wall" of the Historic Lionel Layout are interactive and require the "operator" to reload the barrels, (2 accessories); logs, (2 accessories); ice blocks and milk cans. These are accessories that the kids and parents can operate and reload to operate again. We station a volunteer nearby to explain the accessory to the families and show them how to run the toy and then we stand back and let them interact like it's the 1950's again :-) We have very few problems with kids or adults abusing or breaking stuff on the layout. The experience is magical! President RMLI - Don Fisher |
